Danielle Cohn is a 14-year-old YouTuber and Musical.ly star. Despite her young age and lack of talent she is very famous - but for all the wrong reasons. She's known for photoshopping her pictures, wearing revealing clothes and dating boys way older than her. To me, she's just a kid getting way too much attention.
The amount of hate videos about her on YouTube should be a clear indication of how problematic she is. Today I'm going to talk about a specific video on her called, "danielle cohn is a liar".
To Summarise:
The first (very well-put) statement that this video makes is that "she has this one eating disorder video where she literally lies and lies about having it." The video uses clips of Danielle talking about her struggles with her body image and her advice to other girls to embrace their natural bodies instead of using photoshop. The person who made the video has numerous problems with this. They highlight Danielle's hypocrisy as Danielle has definitely photoshopped her own pictures before. They express a complete disbelief in Danielle's eating disorder.
Danielle says, "I just stopped eating. I would not eat because I was scared that I would look fat and I know definitely that I am not the only person who has gone through that." To that, the person says, "her explanation is so vague like??... her skipping breakfast once is so offensive."
Danielle then goes on to say, "you should not feel the need to change for anyone. You should just feel the need to be yourself... and everyone is different." To this the person criticises, "i CANTTTTTT SHE THINKS HER SAYING LOVE URSELF would CURE eating disorders", "she just rants about trends and sh*t and thinks shes making an impact as if she maritn luther king."
Hear me out,
It is important to note Danielle's age. Although there has been speculation that she is younger than she claims to be, 14 years old is pretty young as it is. Think back on what you were like when you were 14. I was attention seeking and trying out new trends that I would see on Twitter and would try to imitate my older cousins and peers. I don't see much of a difference between myself and Danielle - except that she has millions of followers.
This highlights the real problem in this situation - her influence. She has
3 million followers on Instagram
10 million followers on Musical.ly
9 million followers on Twitter
When we were younger we couldn't really broadcast our daily activities on the internet and even if we could, we most likely wouldn't have had millions of people watching our every move. Danielle has become an influencer fueled by the people that watch her - whether they hate or love her. Because of this she has become an icon for girls her age. They want to be like her because she gets attention, boys and clicks and that is what is desirable right now. There are probably thousands of girls just like Danielle who dress provocatively, show off their parents' money and plaster all of that on every social media platform, yet Danielle stands out because we focus on her.
She should not be letting social media dominate her life the way it does. But we as a community also have somewhat of a responsibility to her. We know that she is just a kid. She will make mistakes and use photoshop, she won't know much about real people and eating disorders. She says what she knows and if that isn't what we like to hear we should just stop watching her.
Honestly,
who was she really hurting by talking about her body issues? And just as you frown upon her for assuming she has an eating disorder, you assumed that she doesn't, which may be even more harmful because you discredit her feelings and struggles.
Danielle Cohn may be sending the wrong messages to young girls out there, but it is us who gives her the platform to do so.
Consider different perspectives.

You really got me with this one.
I really enjoyed how you showed the story from two different perspectives.
Initially i thought you were going against what you were speaking about, which was to stop giving her a platform to spew out her aids. But in the end you really pulled a sneaky on me and i realized that we shouldn't discredit her because shes only 14, but rather look at this from both angles and get all the facts before passing judgment on her.
You really make reading a lot more enjoyable.
Thank you for such an amazing article i really can't wait for the next one;)
