Smoke signals, notes passed in class, IM - all of these are different ways different generations communicate. Ours is memes. And I know what you're thinking - but what exactly are memes for? The answer is: e v e r y t h i n g.

Twitter is our newspaper and memes are our responses. Memes are a clear indication of what is going on in the world right now and how people felt about it. And - believe it or not - memes are pretty hard to crack. This makes memage an art form. Yes. I said that. Memes are art.

The humour is specific to age groups and most of the time related to other memes or even popular videos or vines - meaning that memes will need to be studied to have a comprehensive understanding of. For example, how does one explain the whole Apache Attack helicopter buzzword? How does one know what a meme is referring to unless they know that the internet is disappointed by McDonald's ice-cream machines constantly being broken?

Finally, memes are literally the scribes of this generation. Memes record ALL news and the population's feelings towards it. Memes can even be more relevant than news channels because they provide the ability to receive consistent updates to stories live and are catered towards what people actually care about and what is actually important to us these days. I could totally see some Donald Trump or ISIS memes ending up in some History exam papers in the near future.

For people who look down on memes, it is important to understand that they are not just a source of procrastination, but also humour, an expression and communication of emotions, a vessel through which people can be themselves and create communities of people who care for the same issues and integrated, relevant current affairs. Memes are our communication.

Until next time, have a great day!
